NewBridge Offers Free Alcohol Prevention Program

Friday, March 23, 2012

NORTH JERSEY, N.J., March 23, 2012 – To help combat underage drinking, NewBridge Services, Inc. is offering its free Fatal Vision® goggles program to schools and organizations. Over the past year, 1,625 students from 12 area schools have worn the Fatal Vision® goggles and experienced impairment that comes with drinking alcohol.

“Many teens don’t understand how alcohol affects the brain and impairs one’s ability to drive, walk or even write,” said Mary Vineis, prevention services coordinator at NewBridge, a nonprofit provider of behavioral and educational services. Through the program, students experience the sensations of losing control and learn that alcohol consumption is particularly dangerous for teenagers because their brains won’t fully develop until their mid-20s.

“They are more susceptible to becoming addicted, and the alcohol can damage the portion of the brain that handles memory, which affects their ability to learn,” Vineis said.

School officials rave about the hands-on program, which includes a video and discussion. One educator noted that its incorporation of diverse learning styles allows it to reach all students.

NewBridge runs the free program and also lends out the kit to teachers, police officers, student assistance coordinators, school resource officers, nurses or other leaders of children’s groups. The kits include goggles, class materials, videos and teaching guides.

Funding is provided through a federal grant from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention to the state Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control. For more information or to receive a copy of NewBridge’s prevention program brochure for schools and youth organizations, call Mary Vineis at (973) 839-2521 ext. 2228.
